What are virtual particles? Why are they theoretically key to universe generation?

Of course matter can be created from energy. As we all know from from Einstein's famous equation. This, though cannot be used to justify the creation of the universe, since it does not explain where energy, time or space come from. Assuming it is gravitational potential energy already assumes massive particles.
